# Spectrum Analyzer: The “RF Microscope” for Gaining Insight into the Essence of Signals
In today’s world, where wireless communication technologies are sweeping across the globe, the spectrum analyzer—a core testing tool in the RF field—has become engineers’ “golden key” for unlocking the secrets of signals. From 5G base station debugging to satellite communication monitoring, from electromagnetic compatibility testing to radar signal analysis, the spectrum analyzer transforms time-domain signals into frequency-domain spectra, revealing every hidden feature of signals in complex electromagnetic environments.
### I. From Principle to Form: An Evolutionary Map of Spectrum Analyzers
The core principle of a spectrum analyzer is based on the Fourier transform—the ability to decompose any complex signal into a superposition of sine waves with different frequencies, amplitudes, and phases. Traditional superheterodyne spectrum analyzers use a mixer to downconvert the input signal to an intermediate frequency, which is then filtered and amplified before being detected to extract amplitude information. Finally, the resulting spectral distribution is displayed on the screen. Although this architecture has limitations in scanning speed, its dynamic range can reach as high as 160 dB, making it still indispensable for high-precision testing applications such as radar and satellite systems.
The advent of real-time spectrum analyzers marks a technological leap. Utilizing wideband ADC direct-sampling technology, these instruments can simultaneously capture signal variations across the entire frequency band. Coupled with a three-dimensional waterfall display function, they clearly illustrate the trajectories of signal frequency and amplitude over time. For example, the TFN RMT series spectrum analyzer boasts a 100 MHz real-time bandwidth, enabling it to instantly lock onto transient interference in 5G NR signals—something that conventional swept-frequency analyzers often struggle to accomplish in such scenarios.
The Vector Signal Analyzer (VSA) further breaks through dimensional limitations. By simultaneously measuring both the amplitude and phase information of a signal, the VSA can demodulate complex modulation formats such as QAM and OFDM. Its Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) measurement accuracy can reach as high as 0.1%, making it a critical tool for 5G Massive MIMO beamforming testing.
### 2. Core Parameters: The “Genetic Code” That Determines Test Accuracy
When selecting a spectrum analyzer, the following five core parameters form the performance evaluation system:
1. **Frequency Range**: A general-purpose instrument covering the 9 kHz to 50 GHz range can meet most communication testing requirements, while spectrum analyzers for millimeter-wave bands (such as 24 GHz–100 GHz) are specifically designed for cutting-edge applications like 6G and automotive radar.
2. **Resolution Bandwidth (RBW):** For every 10-fold reduction in RBW, the noise level decreases by 10 dB. When testing the -3 dB bandwidth of 5G signals, an RBW of 1 Hz can precisely distinguish adjacent channels, whereas an RBW of 1 MHz is more suitable for fast-scan scenarios.
3. **Dynamic Range**: High-end devices can achieve a dynamic range of over 120 dB, meaning...
